Description
We present Firefly, an open-source (AGPL) multi-user web interface for Brightway with browsing, editing, LCIA and contribution analysis. It runs at brightway.eaternity.ch and as a desktop app. The latest release ships preloaded with the public release of the Eaternity Database: 1,066 food products re-based from a licensed background onto the open Swiss BAFU/UVEK 2026 database, each with its complete, licence-free inventory chain.
We show how we got there. Every replaced inventory was checked in a pairwise review against its publications and data sources. The published models behind those sources were rebuilt in Python and run ourselves rather than copied as factors: RothC and ICBM soil carbon, Indigo-N and IPCC 2019 nitrogen, IPCC Tier 2 rice methane and livestock, SALCA reconciled against Agroscope's open release, land-use change and seabed carbon. AI made this possible at a scale a small team could not reach otherwise: it transcribed and indexed a library of 4,500+ papers, researched FAOSTAT, HESTIA and national statistics, and wrote much of the model code, all reviewed and tested; every value still traces to a paper, a dataset or a model, never to a generated number. About 80 such tributaries feed one merged mapping of 15,600 entries. Each entry carries uncertainty bounds, declared omissions and a quality score recomputed from the data on every run. Firefly shows provenance and quality on every node, in the Sankey and in the exchange table, and answers questions on the live project through a built-in assistant.
